Harriet Tubman Summit

Events celebrating Harriet Tubman, the Underground Railroad, freedom, and more this are part of the first-ever, month-long Harriet Tubman Summit, happening this September, and tying into the nation's 250th birthday. The summit highlights Tubman’s pivotal role as a fearless abolitionist, spy and suffragist, celebrating her enduring impact on American history. Throughout September, you can engage in community service in honor of Tubman’s life of service, be part of a tribute to General Tubman (with 250 women veterans slated to gather, lectures, a gala, drum processional and waterside libations, music, and more. The events happen in Dorchester County, Maryland – the place where Harriet Tubman's journey began. 

September is also International Underground Railroad Month in Maryland.

Events include:

• Day of Beautification, Sept. 5: Join a clean-up of the Beacon of Hope Harriet Tubman sculpture.
• Day of Resilience, Sept. 12: Be part of the procession from the Dorchester County Courthouse (home of the Beacon of Hope Tubman sculpture) to the waterfront, with drum processional and waterside libations.
• A Tribute to General Tubman, Sept. 26: One of the summit’s signature events will bring 250 women veterans together at the Dorchester County Courthouse to honor Harriet Tubman’s extraordinary military legacy and her posthumous promotion to brigadier general. • Dr. Edda L. Fields-Black Lecture, Sept. 26: Pulitzer Prize-winning historian and author of "Combee: Harriet Tubman, the Combahee River Raid, and Black Freedom During the Civil War" gives a talk.
• Future of Freedom Through Technology, Sept. 26: Explore how access to technology and meeting our youth where they already are through gaming can open doors to careers in esports, artificial intelligence, and other emerging technology fields. Titus Walker is founder and CEO of the Ultimate Endgamers League (UEL).
• Beacon of Hope Veterans Gala, Sept. 26: Formal, black-tie event brings together veterans, families, and supporters.
• Veterans Retreat & Community Cookout at Patriot Point, Sept. 27: Gather at Patriot Point on Taylors Island for a day of connection, reflection and community along the waterways and landscapes that shaped Tubman’s early life.
• Pride of Baltimore II at Long Wharf, Oct. 3: The summit concludes on the Choptank River, with tours of Maryland’s famous tall ship Pride of Baltimore II while she is docked at Long Wharf in Cambridge.

It’s a month that looks not only at what Harriet Tubman accomplished, but at the ideas she embodied — courage, resilience, freedom, service and the determination to create a better future for others.

And there may be no more meaningful place to experience it than Dorchester County, Maryland, where Harriet Tubman was born and where her journey began.
