48 hours of Spring in Dorchester County

Posted March 31, 2026

If you’re looking for an easy spring getaway, Dorchester County makes a pretty convincing case. In just two days, you can pick tulips, wander a historic small town, sip local wine, spot birds over the marsh, and follow the story of Harriet Tubman through the landscapes that shaped her life.

Day 1: Tulips, small-town charm, and vineyard views

Start your weekend at Vintage Family Farms in Hurlock, where spring means rows of colorful blooms and the Eastern Shore’s only U-pick tulip field. Depending on when you visit, you may also find hyacinths and daffodils in bloom, making this one of the most seasonal stops you can make in April.

Nordic Cottage BakeryFrom there, head to East New Market, a quiet town with deep roots and more than 75 historic structures representing 18th-, 19th-, and 20th-century architecture. It’s a nice place to slow down for a bit, take a short walk (here's a self-guided tour), and admire the kind of streetscape that feels increasingly rare. If you’re visiting this spring, it’s also a good excuse to stop by the new Nordic Cottage bakery.

In the afternoon, make your way to Layton’s Chance Vineyard & Winery. Set among more than 14 acres of vineyards, it’s an easy place to linger with a tasting, a picnic, or a walk along the nature trail. If your timing works out, you may even catch one of the winery’s spring events or live music dates.

Day 2: Blackwater and Harriet Tubman’s Dorchester

Start the second day at Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge, one of Dorchester County’s signature landscapes. The refuge is known for its tidal marsh, forests, wetlands, and croplands, and Wildlife Drive offers excellent chances to see waterfowl, shorebirds, turtles, bald eagles, and ospreys. Spring is an especially rewarding time to visit, with migration underway and the marsh beginning to green up.

If your trip lines up with one of Blackwater’s guided birding tours, even better. Otherwise, the Wildlife Drive, trails, and pull-offs make it easy to explore at your own pace.

In the afternoon, turn toward one of Dorchester County’s most meaningful stories: Harriet Tubman’s connection to this landscape. Dorchester County is central to Tubman’s life and legacy, and a visit to a Harriet Tubman site adds depth to a spring weekend that might otherwise be all scenery. You could choose the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad State Park & Visitor Center in Church Creek – just a few minutes from Blackwater – or spend time in Downtown Cambridge at the Harriet Tubman Museum & Educational Center, which is working on an overhaul with new murals, sound, and video installations.

Wrap up the day in Cambridge with shopping in the small but quaint downtown, dinner, and a walk along the waterfront. Dorchester County is known for fresh and local seafood, especially crabs and oysters, but in Downtown Cambridge you'll also find BBQ, Indian, Mexican, fine dining, artisan cocktails, a tiki-style spot, and a microbrewery.

If you’re here on April 25

Consider adding Chicone Village Day – a celebration of Native American culture – at Handsell Historic Site for a deeper look at history n the region.
