Honor the life of Harriet Tubman, the Underground Railroad hero who was born here in Dorchester County in the 1820s. After being born into slavery and suffering harsh conditions for more than 25 years, she escaped to freedom in Pennsylvania. But then she did the unthinkable – she risked her life more than dozen times to come back and lead friends and family to freedom. We celebrate her courage and selflessness on March 9-10, which we unofficially call Tubman Weekend. March 10 is the 105th anniversary of her passing in 1913. That weekend, the Harriet Tubman Museum & Educational Center will host its annual Harriet Tubman Banquet on March 9 in Cambridge, MD, with an inspirational speaker and a delicious dinner. All are welcome to attend. The next day, March 10, the Harriet Tubman Underground State Park & Visitor Center in Church Creek, MD, holds a special day of events.
