The original Kalmar Nyckel (Key of Kalmar) was a Swedish ship built by the Dutch, famed for carrying Swedish settlers to North America in 1638 to establish the colony of New Sweden. A replica of the ship was launched at Wilmington, Delaware, in 1997. The re-creation measures 94 feet on deck and 131 feet overall, with a 25-foot beam, a 12-foot draft, and a displacement of 300 tons.
Today it serves as a floating classroom and an inspirational platform for education and recreation. The Kalmar Nyckel Foundation is a Wilmington, Del. non-profit, volunteer-based educational organization that built, owns, and operates Kalmar Nyckel.
Long Wharf is located at 100 High Street in Cambridge, Maryland.
