The Nanticoke Historic Preservation Alliance is sponsoring the fifth Annual Chicone Village Day at Handsell on Saturday, April 29 from 10am-5pm on Indiantown Road in Vienna, MD. The day is designed to honor the historic culture of the Eastern Woodland Native People who resided on this location. Tour a replica Native American longhouse, watch demonstrations by cultural historic and native interpreter Daniel Firehawk Abbott, see the new Native garden and work shelter, watch presentations by the Pocomoke Indian Nation, and sample authentic Native foods (admission fee to food tent), and tour the historic Handsell house and kitchen.

The Chicone Village Project, begun in 2013 with the ground breaking of an authentic native dwelling lodge or longhouse has expanded now to include not only the first functional, authentically built native dwelling in Maryland, but also a native garden and Native Work Shelter.

Admission is $2 for adults; children 12 and under free. Handsell is located at 4837 Indiantown Road near Vienna, Maryland.

DIRECTIONS: From Route 50, take the exit for Vienna (Route 331 North) near the Nanticoke River Bridge. Turn left at end of ramp. Take first right onto Indiantown Road. (“Scenic Maryland” sign is here). Road makes sharp turn to left, follow over the Chicone Creek bridge, up the hill. Handsell will appear on your right in the field about 1/4 mile down.
