Spocott Windmill celebrates its 50th anniversary with a special Earth Day celebration on April 23 from 10am to 3pm.
Fifty years ago, Dorchester County master boat builder Jim Richardson and his crew were putting the finishing touches on the Spocott Windmill. On Saturday, April 23, we will celebrate the 50th anniversary of that occasion. Sadly, the windmill will not be running. Major repairs still need to be made to the stones, and lifting a 700-pound millstone to work on it is not an easy task. This should be completed in time for Spocott’s October 15 Open House.
At the April event, you can still tour the windmill and all the buildings, meet Adaline Wheatley (re-enactor of the woman who was the chef for the Spocott family), go to school 19th century style, visit a number of craft exhibits, eat some tasty food, and listen to great music. There also are many activities and crafts geared to children of all ages. And best of all, there is no charge for activities.
