Dorchester Center for the Arts is excited to announce a new free, family-friendly arts event, “Making Big Waves – Hoopers Island First Chalk Festival: Creating Healing Waves One Chalk Line at a Time.” The festival will be held Nov. 5-6, 2022 from 11am to 4pm daily, at “The Mural,” 1123 Ballpark Road, Fishing Creek, and is presented in partnership with Kelly Ellis-Neal at the Bungalow by the Bay.

Five chalk artists from as far away as California will join Hoopers Island Chalk Artist Ed Krell to demonstrate their work for two days in the Boat Barn on Hoopers Island, and raise awareness for mental health. Each day will also feature chalk arts workshops for all ages run by Lori Antoinette, the leader of the “Chalk Mafia” Facebook group, plus live music, art and community vendors, and food.

ARTS & FREE WORKSHOPS: On both days, visitors will be able to walk through the barn to watch the art unfold and interact with the artists. The festival artists will create their work on 8-foot by 8-foot boards, which will be saved for an exhibit to highlight mental health awareness. See how it starts on Saturday, then come back Sunday to view the finished works of art. Participating chalk artists are Lori Antoinette (California), Abigail Bowers (Kentucky), Mike Kirby + two youths (Baltimore), Ed Krell (Hoopers Island). Chalk arts workshop led by Lori Antoinette at 12pm Saturday and Sunday; plus Lee Reece with a comic drawing workshop at 2pm Saturday and Sunday.
