Dorchester chef heads to world championships

The Best in Show winner at this year’s Taste of Cambridge Crab Cook-Off is now getting ready to compete in the World Food Championships in Las Vegas in November. This was the first year that the Taste of Cambridge was an official qualifying event for the high-stakes championships. Cranium’s at the Beach, a new restaurant opening this summer in Cambridge, was the Best in Show winner.

Congratulations to all the 2014 Crab Cook-Off People’s Choice winners:

Best Cream of Crab Soup: Jimmie & Sook’s Raw Bar and Grill
Best Maryland Vegetable Crab Soup: Leaky Pete’s Oyster and Wine Bar
Best Crab Cake/Ball: Madison Bay Restaurant
Best Crab Dip: Leaky Pete’s Oyster and Wine Bar
Best Crab Specialty: Ocean Odyssey Seafood Restaurant, for crab fritters with pico de gallo
Best Crab Specialty – Newcomer: Cranium’s at the Beach, for crab nachos
Best in Show: Cranium’s at the Beach, for crab nachos

In the Best in Show category, Cranium’s won be a landslide, with 43 percent of the vote. That’s quite a splash for a restaurant that hasn’t even opened yet. Co-owners Rik Richards and (Lyle) Michael Farmer, as well as Chef Thomas Friend Jr., expect to open in the coming weeks at 420 Race Street in downtown Cambridge. The Best in Show prize means Cranium’s is automatically qualified to compete against 49 other top seafood chefs at the World Food Championships.

The Crab Cook-Off also included the Judges’ Choice awards, determined by a panel of three celebrity judges. Here are those winners:

Best Maryland Vegetable Crab Soup: Stoked Wood-Fired Eatery
Best Crab Cake/Ball: Cambridge Yacht Club
Best Crab Dip: High Spot Gastropub
Best Crab Specialty: Jimmie & Sook’s Raw Bar and Grill, for crab salad
Best Crab Specialty Newcomer: Elliott’s Baking Company, for crab-stuffed pretzel
