Art & Essay Contest for Dorchester’s 350th

The Dorchester County 350th Anniversary Steering Committee invites students in kindergarten through 12th grade to celebrate Dorchester’s diverse history by creating an essay or artwork that answers or illustrates the following:

If you had a time machine and could travel anywhere in Dorchester County’s history, when and where would you go? Why did you choose to travel to that period of history?

Artwork will be judged on expression of the theme, originality, creativity and technical ability. Essays will be judged on theme development, originality, voice (how the author brings the topic to life), and organization, essay structure and sentence fluency.

Winners will be selected in four levels: Grades K-2, Grades 3-5, Middle School (6-8) and High School (9-12). First place winners in each category will receive a cash prize and a family membership to the Dorchester Center for the Arts. Awards will be presented at the Dorchester County Showcase on Sept. 22 in Cambridge.

The essay contest is one of several activities being planned to honor Dorchester County’s 350th Anniversary in 2019. The highlight of the multi-event tribute will be a celebration on Sept. 22 featuring a “heritage village” with displays, historians and reenactments highlighting Dorchester heritage and history, and the opening of a 50-year-old time capsule sealed in 1969. This commemoration will showcase all aspects of Dorchester’s unique history and culture.
