water moves us to make wine
Layton’s Chance Vineyard & Winery
As part of the Layton family, which has been farming in Dorchester for generations, Jennifer never thought they’d move from grain to grapes. But they did, lucky for wine lovers. Today their family-run vineyard and winery celebrates not only the grapes, but the farming way of life with tours of the vineyards and the farm fields next door. While you’re there, sample some of their vintages, from the sweet and fruity Joe’s Cool Red to the full-bodied Chambourcin. With two young children, Jennifer makes sure that the winery is welcoming not only to the over-21 set, but also their youngsters, with games and activities.
I love to visit the shops and galleries in downtown Cambridge. Race Street Gallery and Dorchester Center for the Arts make for great browsing. I’ll spend time at The Wine Bar at A Few of My Favorite Things, then get a bite to eat at one of the many great restaurants.
Favorite spot to take friends from out of town
Suicide Bridge Restaurant. It’s even better when you can take a trip on the Dorothy Megan riverboat.
Top recommendation for visitors
Taking a drive out to Blackwater Refuge is always fun. They have a great visitor center and literature to let you know what animals to look for, no matter what time of year.
